Film Director – Paint Your Vision On Screen
A film director is an individual who directs the making of a film. The director guides a film’s dramatic, aesthetic and artistic aspects. He/she visualizes the script and advises the actors and technical crew in the fulfillment of a cinematic vision. The director is vital in choosing cast members and conceptualising the look of the film. In pre-production, while the production team is scouting location, the director is involved with every single decision regarding what locations, casting, who the production designer will be, who the camera-man will be. The director works with an entire crew to create the film.
During the shooting process, when the plan that was made in pre-production is executed, the director continues to be an incredibly vital person. Although there is a plan in place, take for example, the cinematographer knows how a scene is going to be shot, the director nonetheless has to keep an eye on all facets, from what the actors are wearing, to what the props are, to every shot that is taken. This is also where the director works intensely with the actors.
During the post-production process, the director collaborates with the editors, the cinematographer, the sound designer and other personnel who realize the film’s original vision. The director is the person with the paintbrush, painting his vision on screen. In film criticism, auteur theory holds that a film reflects a directors’ personal vision like he / she were the author of the visual narrative.
The acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa described a film director as a front line commanding officer saying, “He needs a thorough knowledge of each branch of the service, and if he doesn’t command each division, he can’t command the whole”. It is for this reason that directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Satyajit Ray etc. are considered to be the ones who shaped cinema to what it is today.
